National institutions actively involved in the ICG/NEAMTWS participate in a number of research projects funded by the European Commission addressing tsunamis in the North-eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean and connected seas. Such projects have a direct relevance to the NEAMTWS.
SCHEMA (Scenarios for Hazard-induced Emergencies Management) Objective: technique and the results for defining vulnerability criteria and producing tsunami impact maps in the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Black Sea Budget: Duration: 36 months Start date: 1 August 2007 Ended June 2010 Coordinator: GSC - Geosciences Consultants
SAFER (Seismic Early Warning for Europe) Objective: exploiting the possibilities offered by real-time analysis of the signals coming from seismic networks, with applications in Mediterranean cities including Istanbul, Athens, Naples and Cairo. Budget: €3.6 million Duration: 30 months Start date: 15 June 2006 Coordinator: GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (Germany)
SEAHELLARC (Seismic and Tsunami Risk Assessment and Mitigation Scenarios in the Western Hellenic Arc) Objective: establishing a realtime onshore/offshore network of seismic and tsunami observations focusing on the Hellenic Arc and investigate early warning scenarios for the western Peloponnes. Budget: €1.3 million Duration: 36 months Start date: 1 June 2006 Coordinator: Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (Greece)
NEAREST (Integrated Observations from Near Shore Sources of Tsunamis: toward an early warning system) Objective: identification and characterization of large potential tsunami sources located near the Gulf of Cadiz and improvement of near realtime detection of signals for a tsunami early warning system. Budget: €2.85 million Duration: 36 months Start date: 1 September 2006 Ended March 2010 Coordinator: Istituto di Scienze del Mare, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Italy)
TRANSFER (Tsunami Risk and Strategies for the European Region) Objective: contributing to our understanding of tsunami processes in the Euro-Mediterranean region, to the tsunami hazard, vulnerability and risk assessment. Budget: €3.3 million Duration: 30 months Start date: 1 September 2006 Ended September 2009 Coordinator: University of Bologna

Assessment, STrategy And Risk Reduction for Tsunamis in Europe (ASTARTE)
Objective: The ultimate goal of ASTARTE is to reach a higher level of tsunami resilience in the NEAM (North East Atlantic & Mediterranean) region, to improve preparedness of coastal populations, and, ultimately, to save lives and assets.
Start date: 1 November 2013
